律中佛大弟子。皆自經營精舍。如大迦葉自蹋泥等。毘婆沙論問曰。諸大弟子漏結已盡。何故恓恓有所經營。答曰有五事一為（報佛）恩故。二為長養佛法故。三為滅凡劣眾自貢高故。四為將來弟子。折伏憍豪故。五為發起將來福業故。

In the Vinaya, the Buddha's great disciples all managed vihāras themselves, such as Mahākāśyapa personally trampling mud, and so forth. The Vibhāṣā-śāstra asks: 'The great disciples had already eradicated all outflows and bonds; why were they so busily engaged in management?' It answers: 'For five reasons: 1. To repay the Buddha's kindness; 2. To nurture the Buddha-Dharma; 3. To quell the self-conceit of the ordinary and inferior multitude; 4. To subdue the arrogance of future disciples; 5. To initiate future meritorious deeds.'
