The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya says: Monastics should have few affairs and few duties, so as not to be censured by worldly people and lose the wholesome merit of others. ○ The Scripture of Three Thousand Deportments says: There are three affairs to be performed by monastics: first, sitting in meditation; second, reciting scriptures; third, admonishing and transforming others. If one is fully equipped with these three matters amidst all affairs, this conforms to the Dharma of monastics. If one does not practice them, one is living in vain and dying in vain, possessing only the causes for receiving retribution for sin. ○ The Sūtra on the Samādhi of Contemplating the Buddha says: A bhikṣu constantly practices four dharmas: first, in the six periods of the day and night, confessing transgressions and repenting; second, constantly cultivating recollection of the Buddha without deceiving sentient beings; third, cultivating a mind of the six points of reverent harmony without anger or arrogance; fourth, fully cultivating the six recollections, as if extinguishing fire on one's head (the six recollections are recollection of the Buddha, recollection of the Dharma, recollection of the Saṅgha, recollection of the precepts, recollection of giving, and recollection of the devas; the Scripture on the Profound Merit says: 'These six dharmas of recollection are born from the bodhicitta and are the dharmas of bodhi'). ○ The Sūtra of Transcending the Sun's Radiance says: A bhikṣu has four dharmas: first, constantly contemplating the Tathāgata and erecting Buddha images; second, upon hearing the profound meaning of the scriptures, having faith and practicing it; third, although not seeing the Buddha, clearly understanding original non-existence; fourth, knowing that the Buddhas of the ten directions share one single Dharmakāya.
