僧祇律云。佛住舍衛國。阿難有一知識。合門疫死。唯有一小兒在。阿難行過。小兒隨後喚。阿難不聞。為世人譏云。沙門他有強親。今見孤遺不顧。小兒隨入祇園。阿難白佛。此小兒得度否。佛言汝作何心度。答慈愍心。佛言得度（度此小兒。亦不作童子。便剃髮號。驅鳥沙彌）。

The Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: 'The Buddha was dwelling in Śrāvastī. Ānanda had an acquaintance whose entire household died of an epidemic, leaving only one small child. Ānanda walked past, and the small child called after him. Ānanda did not hear. People in the world ridiculed him, saying: "The śramaṇa has influential relatives, but seeing this orphan left behind, he pays no heed." The small child followed him into the Jetavana. Ānanda addressed the Buddha: "May this small child be ordained?" The Buddha said: "With what mind do you ordain him?" He replied: "With a mind of compassion." The Buddha said: "He may be ordained."' (Ordaining this small child did not make him a boy [candidate] either; his head was immediately shaved, and he was named a crow-scaring novice [śrāmaṇera]).
