This is the title used immediately after one's hair has fallen. The Sanskrit sound has been corrupted; translated here it means 'resting in kindness' (xici), meaning one rests peacefully in the ground of compassion. Furthermore, this person rests the feelings of worldly defilement in order to benevolently rescue all beings. It is also said that when first entering the Buddha-Dharma, one often retains secular sentiments; hence one must rest evil and practice kindness. / The Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra states: 'Śrāmaṇeraka in the language of Tang means "diligently urged man" (qince nan), meaning this person separates from the four inherent offences and the six formulated offences, diligently urging himself not to transgress, making himself pure.' / The Account of the Inner Law Sent Home from the South Seas states: 'Śrāmaṇera in the language of Tang means "seeking peace" (qiuji). Peace refers to nirvāṇa. It means this person has left the house of afflictions and seeks to proceed toward nirvāṇa.'
