The Account of the Inner Law Sent Home from the South Seas states: 'In the Western countries, leaving home fully accords with the holy regulations. For anyone who resolves to leave home, the master first questions him about the obstacles. When there are no obstacles, he permits accepting him. After a ten-day period or a month, allowing him to settle down, the master then confers the five precepts upon him; only then is he called an upāsaka. This is the foundation for newly entering the Buddha-Dharma, included among the seven assemblies. Next, the master prepares for him the saṃghāṭī, saṃkakṣikā, lower robe, water filter, bowl, and so forth, and only then invites an ācārya to be his tonsure master, who personally puts on his lower robe, then gives him the upper robe, instructing him to receive and wear it upon his head, and having put it on, gives him the bowl vessel and confers the ten precepts. This is called a śrāmaṇera; only then is he legally established, included within the five assemblies, and able to consume offerings. If one fears that he will break the ten precepts and fail to attain the full precepts, then he falsely bears the title of "seeking peace"; since he should not consume the permanent property of the Saṃgha and accept offerings, what doubt is there that he incurs debt? One should deliver him in accordance with the teaching.'
