毘尼母論云。沙彌應知慚愧。善住事師。法中不應懈怠放恣。當自慎身口卑己敬人。常樂持戒。莫樂調戲。不應自恃才力。復莫輕躁。應知羞恥。不說無定亂言。惟庠序合理。知淨不淨。常逐二師。讀誦經法。一切眾中。若有所作。皆不得違○五百問經云。沙彌詐稱大道人。受比丘一拜。是名賊住○有沙彌七十二威儀經一卷。在傳字函。好善有請檢讀之。

The Vinayamātṛkā-śāstra states: "A novice (śrāmaṇera) should possess a sense of shame and conscience, dwell well in serving his teachers, and not be indolent or unrestrained regarding the Dharma. He should guard his body and speech, humble himself and venerate others, always delight in keeping the precepts, and never delight in jesting and play. He should not rely on his own talent and strength, nor should he be frivolous and hasty. He should know modesty and shame, and not utter erratic, disruptive speech. He should only be dignified, composed, and accordant with principle; he must discern between the pure and the impure. He should constantly attend the two teachers, chanting and reciting the scriptures and teachings. In all matters among the assembly, he must never act contrary [to the rules]." / The Five Hundred Questions Sūtra states: "If a novice falsely claims to be a senior person of the Way and accepts a single prostration from a monk, this is called 'dwelling as a thief.'" / There is the Scripture on the Seventy-Two Deportments for Novices in one fascicle, which is kept in case 'chuan' (傳); let those who love good inquire into it and read it.
