The Sarvāstivāda-śāstra states: "The saṃghāṭī has three grades. The nine strips, eleven strips, and thirteen strips are called the lower-grade robes, all made of two long strips and one short strip. The fifteen strips, seventeen strips, and nineteen strips are called the middle-grade robes, all made of three long strips and one short strip. The twenty-one strips, twenty-three strips, and twenty-five strips are called the upper-grade robes, all made of four long strips and one short strip." / The Zenghuiji asks: "Which grade includes the seven-strip robe?" It answers: "It is included in the lower grade, because it is made of two long strips and one short strip" (in the Vinaya, each of the three robes has a measure of width and length in cubits; since the Buddha said to make the robes according to the body, they are not recorded here).
