僧祇律云。佛住王舍城。帝釋石窟前經行。見稻田畦畔分明。語阿難言。過去諸佛衣相如是。從今依此作衣相○增輝記云。田畦貯水。生長嘉苗。以養形命。法衣之田。潤以四利之水。增其三善之苗。以養法身慧命也。

The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: "When the Buddha was staying in Rājagṛha, he walked back and forth in front of the stone cave of Indra. Seeing that the ridges between the rice fields were distinct, he said to Ānanda: 'The robe marks of the past Buddhas were like this. From now on, make the robe marks based on this.'" / The Zenghuiji states: "The field ridges store water, growing fine sprouts to nourish the physical life; the field of the Dharma robe is moistened by the water of the four benefits and increases the sprouts of the three goods, thereby nourishing the Dharma body and wisdom life."
