The Buddha said to Ānanda: 'There are two kinds of robes: those that may be frequented and those that may not. If wearing fine robes increases one's mind for the Way, they may be frequented; if they impair the mind for the Way, they may not be frequented. Therefore, some attain the Way from fine robes, and some attain the Way from shabby robes. What is awakened lies in the mind, not restricted to outer clothing.' ○ The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: 'The Buddha said: "From this day forth, if there is a monk who single-mindedly seeks nirvāṇa and turns his back on the world, I permit him to wear robes worth a hundred thousand ounces of gold and eat foods of a hundred flavors."'
