1.330

五分律云。初佛成道為二賈客及女人須闍陀。并五比丘。皆受二歸緣。未有僧故（此就小乘別體住持三寶說也）。

The Mahīśāsaka Vinaya states: "When the Buddha first attained enlightenment, he bestowed the two refuges upon the two merchants, the woman Sujātā, and the five bhikṣus, for the reason that the Saṃgha did not yet exist." (This is explained in terms of the Hīnayāna individual-entity enduring Three Jewels.)
