There are two kinds. First, the ten precepts of the śrāmaṇera. The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya states: "First, abstaining from taking life; second, abstaining from taking what is not given; third, abstaining from unchaste conduct; fourth, abstaining from false speech; fifth, abstaining from drinking alcohol; sixth, abstaining from occupying high, broad, or large beds; seventh, abstaining from wearing flower garlands, jeweled necklaces, smearing the body, and scenting clothes; eighth, abstaining from engaging in singing and dancing, going to watch or listen, and storing various musical instruments; ninth, abstaining from keeping gold, silver, money, and jewels; tenth, abstaining from eating at improper times." Second, the ten precepts of the bodhisattva, which add to the previous five precepts: sixth, not praising oneself and disparaging others; seventh, not speaking of the faults of householder or renunciant bodhisattvas; eighth, not being greedy; ninth, not harboring anger; tenth, not slandering the Three Jewels. (These ten precepts are called the inexhaustible precepts; the Vibhāṣā states: "The bodhisattva's śīla is free of self and what belongs to self, free of all that is graspable, and extinguishes all conceptual proliferation; hence it is called inexhaustible.")
