These are the Mahāyāna bodhisattva precepts: First, the precepts of moral discipline (saṃvara-śīla), meaning there is no evil that is not abandoned, giving rise to practices that realize the Path; they are the cause for the virtue of severing [defilements] and are cultivated to accomplish the dharmakāya. (For these precepts, cessation is upholding, and action is transgression.) Second, the precepts of gathering wholesome dharmas (kuśaladharma-saṃgrāhaka-śīla), meaning there is no good that is not accumulated, namely the wholesome deeds of body, speech, and mind, as well as developing the three wisdoms of hearing, thinking, and cultivating, the ten pāramitās, the eighty-four thousand practices aiding the Path, and so forth; they are the cause for the virtue of wisdom and are cultivated to accomplish the fruit of the saṃbhogakāya. (For these precepts, action is upholding, and cessation is transgression.) Third, the precepts of gathering sentient beings (sattvārthakriyā-śīla), also called the precepts of benefiting sentient beings, meaning there are no beings who are not delivered, giving rise to the non-abiding Path; they are the cause for the virtue of grace and are cultivated to accomplish the fruit of the nirmāṇakāya. (For these precepts, action is upholding, and cessation is transgression.) The Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra states: "The first precept takes restraint and prevention as its essence; the latter two precepts take diligence and vigor as their essence."
