In the language of the Hua [it translates as] 'particular liberation' (biejietuo). 'Liberation' refers to the fruit brought about by the precepts. The commentary says: When the path-precepts are termed 'liberation', this refers to the non-manifest intention (avijñapti-cetanā) of the seven branches [of bodily and vocal karma], so named because of their severing of afflictions. When the phenomenal precepts are termed 'liberation', it means that when monks and nuns receive the precepts, in accordance with their confrontation with phenomena such as killing, by not committing them, each distinct act produces no cause and yields no fruit; hence it is called 'particular liberation'. The Vinayamātṛkā states: 'Prātimokṣa' is the supreme meaning, the foundation of all wholesome deeds; because all wholesome deeds arise taking the precepts as their root.
