僧祇律云。舍利弗白佛言。有幾利益。為弟子制戒。佛言有十利益。一攝僧故。二極攝僧故。三令僧安樂故。四折伏無羞人故。五有慚愧者。得安隱住持故。六不信者令得信故。七正信者增益故。八於現法中。得漏盡故。九未生諸漏令不生故。十正法得久住。為諸天人開甘露門故○攝大乘論云。如來制戒。有二意。一為聲聞自度故。二為菩薩自度度他故。

The Mahāsaṃghika Vinaya states: Śāriputra addressed the Buddha, saying: 'With how many benefits do you establish precepts for your disciples?' The Buddha said: 'There are ten benefits: first, to gather the saṃgha; second, to gather the saṃgha supremely; third, to cause the saṃgha to dwell in comfort and joy; fourth, to subdue shameless persons; fifth, so that those with shame and remorse may dwell securely and uphold [the teaching]; sixth, to cause those without faith to attain faith; seventh, to increase [the faith of] those with correct faith; eighth, to attain the exhaustion of outflows in the present life; ninth, to prevent unborn outflows from arising; tenth, so that the correct Dharma may long endure, opening the gate of the deathless (amṛta) for gods and humans.' The Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: 'The Tathāgata established the precepts with two intentions: first, for śrāvakas to liberate themselves; second, for bodhisattvas to liberate themselves and liberate others.'
