起世因本經云。烏脯沙陀。隋言增長。謂。受持齊法。增長善根故。佛教以過中不食名齋。

The Qishi yinben jing says: Upoṣadha; in the Sui language, 'increase and growth'. It means that by receiving and maintaining the upoṣadha practice, one increases wholesome roots. The Buddhist teaching regards not eating past noon as 'zhai'.
