It is also subsumed under secondary food. / The Sengqi lü says: When gruel comes out of the cauldron and its grains do not form characters, only then is it called secondary food. / The Zenghui ji says: The 'small meal' is gruel. / When reading the texts of the five vinaya collections, the origin of gruel is threefold: First, the Sengqi lü says: The Buddha was dwelling in Śrāvastī. The mother of Nanda had cauldron-gruel made, pressed out the upper broth, drank it herself, and felt that the wind [humour] in her body was removed and food digested. She then thought: 'The ācāryas are people who eat one meal a day; they should eat gruel.' She then took much water and little rice, boiled away two parts, and then added black pepper and pippalī. Before the pot was filled, she took it to the Buddha's dwelling and said: 'I only pray that the World-Honoured One will permit the bhikṣus to eat gruel.' The Buddha permitted it, and furthermore spoke a verse for her (the verse is in the text below). / Second, the Sifen lü says: The Buddha was in the country of Nātika; because of Ūṣā's offering of gruel, the Buddha permitted it. / Third, the Shisong lü says: The brāhmaṇa king Agnidatta offered eight kinds of gruel, namely milk, curd, sesame, beans, māṣa, perilla seeds, and the like; the Buddha permitted it.
