婆沙論云。食於二時能作食事。一初食時能消飢渴。二消化時。能益諸根大種。

The Vibhāṣā-śāstra states: Food can perform the function of food at two times: First, at the initial time of eating, it can dispel hunger and thirst. Second, at the time of digestion, it can benefit the faculties and primary elements.
