寶林傳云。期城太守楊衒之。問達磨云。西國相承稱祖何義。達磨曰。明佛心宗。行解相應。名為祖師（此士自達磨西來距曹溪能大師。六人得稱祖師）。

The *Baolin zhuan* says: Yang Xuanzhi, Governor of Qicheng, asked Bodhidharma: "In the Western lands, what is the meaning of succession being called 'ancestor/patriarch'?" Bodhidharma said: "One who clarifies the Buddha-mind school and whose practice and understanding correspond is called a patriarch." (In this land, from Bodhidharma's coming from the West down to Great Master Neng of Caoxi, six persons obtained the title of patriarch).
