今呼念誦迴施也。十誦律云。佛言應為施主種種讚歎呪願。若上座不能。即次座能者作。

Nowadays this is called 'recitation and transference of merit'. The Sarvāstivāda-vinaya says: "The Buddha said: 'One should offer various praises and aspirational prayers for the donor. If the senior elder is unable, then the next elder who is capable should do it.'"
