佛本行集經云。若因斷食當得大福者。其野獸等。應得大福（藏中亦有休糧方法蓋防比丘有難事故。若不食則與自餓外道同儔也）。

The Abhiniṣkramaṇa-sūtra states: If one were to obtain great blessings through fasting, then wild beasts and the like should obtain great blessings. (Within the Canon there are also methods for abstaining from grain, which are merely to guard against times when bhikṣus face adversity. If one does not eat at all, one is on par with the non-Buddhists who starve themselves.)
