寄歸傳云。梵語阿遮梨耶。唐言軌範。今稱闍梨。蓋梵音訛略也○菩提資糧論云。阿遮梨夜。隋言正行○南山鈔云。能紏正弟子行故。

The Nanhai jigui neifa zhuan states: "In Sanskrit, it is ācārya; in the language of the Tang, it means 'model of conduct.' Nowadays, one calls them shélí, which is an abbreviated and corrupt Sanskrit sound." The Bodhisambhāra-śāstra states: "Ācārya means 'correct practice' in the language of the Sui." The Nanshan chao states: "It is because they are able to rectify the conduct of their disciples."
