經音疏云。開達也。明也。解也。士則士夫也。經中多呼菩薩為開士。前秦符堅。賜沙門有德解者。號開士。
The Jingyin shu states: "'Kāi' means open and reached, illuminated, or understood. 'Shì' means an educated person. In the scriptures, bodhisattvas are frequently called enlightened persons. Fu Jian of the Former Qin bestowed upon śramaṇas endowed with virtue and understanding the title 'Enlightened Person.'"
