摭言曰。有司謂之座主。今釋氏取學解優贍頴拔者名座主。謂一座之主。古高僧呼講者為高座。或是高座之主。

The Zhiyan states: "The authorities are called the master of the seat (zuozhu). Now Buddhists use it to refer to those whose learning and understanding are abundant and prominent, calling them seat masters, meaning the master of a single seat. Ancient eminent monks called a lecturer the high seat (gaozuo), or perhaps it means the master of the high seat."
