The Abhidharmakośa-śāstra states: 'First, rejoicing and being content with whatever robes one obtains. Second, rejoicing and being content with whatever food one obtains. Third, rejoicing and being content with whatever bedding one obtains. Fourth, delighting in cultivation and delighting in abandonment' (the first three remedy greed; the last one remedies heedlessness). Because renunciants possess two conditions, [these] are called noble lineages: first, mental aspiration; second, enjoyment. Because these four are capable of generating an unbroken continuum of uncontaminated wholesome states, they are called noble lineages. Furthermore, the Buddha taught that they are called the four supreme treasuries of jewels because they can satisfy the aspirations of those who abide in them. The Ben sheng xin di guan jing says: 'The four immaculate natures mean that a monk, regarding robes, food, bedding, and medicine, feels content according to their coarseness or fineness and remains far removed from covetous seeking, because the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are all born from this.'
