六度集經云。佛因地作貧人云。吾寧守道貧賤而死。不為無道富貴而生○左傳鄭子張曰。生在警戒不在富也。君子曰善戒。

The Liu du ji jing says: 'When the Buddha was in the cause ground as a poor man, he said: "I would rather maintain the Way and die in poverty and lowliness than live in wealth and honor without the Way."' The Zuo zhuan records that Zizhang of Zheng said: 'Life lies in vigilance, not in wealth.' The superior person said: 'Well cautioned!'
