2.185

謂正勤也有四焉。即四種精進遮。二不善法。集。二善法。謂已生不善法令斷。未生者令不生故。未生善令生。已生者令增長故。○智度論云。四種精進心。勇。發。動。畏。錯誤故。言正勤也○順正理論云。無始時來所以不能見四聖諦。都由懈怠。勤能治彼。令樂聽聞。如理思惟。四聖諦理。速證菩提。

This refers to right effort, of which there are four. Namely, the four kinds of diligence prevent two unwholesome phenomena and gather two wholesome phenomena. That is to say: causing unwholesome phenomena that have already arisen to be abandoned, and causing those not yet arisen not to arise; causing wholesome phenomena not yet arisen to arise, and causing those already arisen to increase. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: 'The four kinds of diligence prevent the mind from being cowardly, lazy, shaken, fearful, or mistaken; therefore, they are called right effort.' The Abhidharma-nyāyānusāra-śāstra states: 'The reason why from beginningless time one has been unable to perceive the four noble truths is entirely due to laziness. Diligence can remedy this, enabling one to take joy in listening to and properly contemplating the principle of the four noble truths, and quickly realizing awakening.'
