The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: 'The Sanskrit word is Māra; in the language of Qin it is rendered "taker of life"' (the treatise says: 'Only the Māra of death can truly take life; the others can serve as causes for taking life, and can also take the life of wisdom. The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra says: "Due to the aggregates-māra having the meaning of pervading and following all; the divine māra having the meaning of obstruction; and the death-māra and affliction-māra being able to serve as vessels of suffering for beings undergoing death and birth"'). The Mo ni jing says: 'Lady Daguang said to Mañjuśrī: "Where do the works of Māra reside?" Mañjuśrī said: "They reside in vigor." She asked again: "Why do they reside in vigor?" Mañjuśrī said: "Against one who is vigorous, Māra seeks an opening. If one is lazy, what would he need to do?"' (Because diligence and laziness were clarified, the residence of Māra is thus related). The Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states: 'Regarding the works of Māra: if one's mind delights in pursuing profit, respect, and praise; or heedlessness, stinginess, vast desires, lack of contentment, anger, resentful concealment, deceit, and so forth—all these are the works of Māra.'
