In Sanskrit, it is called Buddha, or *futu*, or *buduo*, or *muda*, or *moduo*; these are dialectal differences across the five regions of India. All are translated as 'Awakened One'—the so-called self-awakened, awakening others, and having awakened practice fully perfected. Now it is abbreviated as 'Buddha.' The Prajñāpradīpa-śāstra states: 'Why is he called Buddha? Because he has unerring, true awakening regarding all phenomena, he is called Buddha.' It also says: 'Within phenomena devoid of intrinsic entity, he awakens without remainder and awakens equally to all phenomena; therefore, he is called Buddha.' The Pusa benxing jing says: 'A Buddha has all evils forever extinguished and all virtues universally assembled. There are no further defilements; all desires are entirely eliminated. The six pāramitās are boundless, all fully completed. Through skillful means he teaches and transforms according to the times. He possesses great spiritual power, a body of purple-gold hue, the thirty-two marks, the eighty minor characteristics, and six pure and penetrating superknowledges. His foreknowledge is endless; his past vision is boundless; there is nothing he does not know in the present. He has the three insights and far-reaching discernment. Possessing such virtues, he is titled Buddha.'
