The Bodhisattvabhūmidhara-sūtra says: 'The Tathāgata possesses ten designations of merit: because he does not speak falsely, he is called (Tathāgata). Having attained all meanings, being an unsurpassed field of merit, and worthy of offerings, he is called Worthy of Offerings (pronounced in the level tone, meaning endowed with the above three senses; if pronounced in the falling tone, it only has the single sense of worthy of offerings). Because he awakens in accord with the supreme truth, he is called Samyak-saṃbuddha. Being endowed with quiescence and insight, he is called Fully Endowed with Knowledge and Conduct. Because he ascends supremely and never returns, he is called Sugata. Knowing the world, the realms of sentient beings, all varieties of afflictions, and purifications, he is called Knower of the World. Possessing supreme skillful wisdom in taming the mind, being the sole hero among all worlds, he is called Unsurpassed Hero and Tamer of Men. Possessing the four kinds of real wisdom and the reality of the teaching, demonstrating definitive meaning, relying on all meanings, extensively expounding to sever all doubts, revealing the profound and pure realm, and serving as the guide for all phenomena, he is called Teacher of Gods and Humans. Being fully endowed with the three aggregates and having equal awakening to all aspects, he is called Buddha. Destroying the power of all māras, he is called Bhagavān.'
