The Sanskrit word is *bhagavā*, or *bhagavant*. This contains six meanings: 1. mastery; 2. flaming radiance; 3. majesty and dignity; 4. fame; 5. auspiciousness; 6. venerable honor. The commentary on the Buddhabhūmi-śāstra composed by Bodhisattva Bandhuprabha states: 'Because the Tathāgata is never bound by afflictions, he possesses the meaning of mastery. Because he is tempered by the blazing fire of wisdom, he possesses the meaning of flaming radiance. Because he is adorned with the wondrous thirty-two marks of a great person, he possesses the meaning of majesty and dignity. Because all supreme merits are fully perfected and there is nothing he does not know, he possesses the meaning of fame. Because all worlds draw near, make offerings to, and praise him, he possesses the meaning of auspiciousness. Because he possesses all virtues, constantly gives rise to skillful means to benefit and bring peace and joy to all sentient beings without remissness, he possesses the meaning of venerable honor.'
