In Sanskrit, sūtram or sūtra; in Chinese, 'thread', taking the sense of stringing together and maintaining. Furthermore, in Sanskrit it is called sūtra or sūtru; under the Qin it was rendered as 'tallying' (qi), meaning that above it tallies with principle and below it tallies with capacities. Now when we say jing (classic/warp), it possesses three senses: permanence, penetration, and origin. Sengzhao said: 'Jing means constant.' Xie Lingyun said: 'Jing means to pass through, to be a ferry, and to penetrate.' This means words arise from principle, and principle is revealed through words; when a learner's spirit awakens, they penetrate through the teaching of principle.
