In Sanskrit it is called vinaya; translated here it is named lü. Lü means standard or rule (dharma). It takes its name from the teaching, meaning it decides, divides, distinguishes light from heavy, hearing, prohibition, upholding, and breaching. The Qingjing bini jing says: 'Subduing afflictions so that they become afflictions [no more] is called vinaya.' The new Sanskrit form says vinaya, which in Tang translation is 'subduing' (tiaofu), meaning displaying monastic rules to subdue the six sense organs and the three poisons. The Sarvāstivāda śāstra says that the vinaya has four meanings: 1. It is the level ground of the Buddha's Dharma, from which the myriad goods arise and grow; 2. All disciples of the Buddha dwell relying on the precepts, and all sentient beings exist relying on the precepts; 3. It is the initial portal for advancing toward nirvāṇa; 4. It is the necklace of the Buddha's Dharma, capable of adorning the Buddha's Dharma.
