Sūtras, vinaya, and śāstras are called the Tripiṭaka. Furthermore, the Buddha-piṭaka, Bodhisattva-piṭaka, and Śrāvaka-piṭaka are called the three piṭakas. 'Piṭaka' (zang) means to subsume, referring to subsuming persons and subsuming dharmas. The Sūtrālaṃkāra says: 'It refers to subsuming all meanings that should be known.' A verse in the Benevolent Kings Sūtra says: 'The ocean of the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha is the treasury of the Three Jewels, in which immeasurable merits are subsumed.' The Abhidharma-samuccaya says: 'Why did the Tathāgata establish the Tripiṭaka? In order to counter the affliction of doubt, he established the Sūtra-piṭaka. In order to counter the secondary afflictions of indulging in the two extremes, he established the Vinaya-piṭaka. In order to counter the secondary afflictions of grasping and clinging to one's own views, he established the Abhidharma-piṭaka.'
