First, the truth of suffering; second, the truth of origination; third, the truth of cessation; fourth, the truth of the path. The Vibhāṣā-śāstra states: 'Compulsion and saṃsāric transmigration are the characteristics of suffering. The karma that produces, develops, and is capable of causing transmigration is the characteristic of origination. Serenity and quiescence are the characteristics of cessation. Renunciation and return to extinction are the characteristics of the path.' It also states: 'All Tathāgatas proclaim and reveal the teaching of the Four Truths in order to deliver sentient beings and enable them to transcend birth and death, and because they wish to show that it is essential to cultivate the path through one's own diligence and not through cultivation by others.'
