The Fazhu jing states: 'The Buddha told Ānanda: "After my nirvāṇa, the true Dharma will endure for one thousand years. Because women have gone forth, it is reduced by five hundred years. The semblance Dharma will endure for one thousand years, and the final Dharma for ten thousand years."' The Commentary states: 'The true Dharma has two aspects: First, the realized true Dharma, which is spoken in terms of realizing the noble path—"true" here means "realized". Second, the taught true Dharma, which refers to the texts of the inner teaching; these are collectively named "true Dharma", encompassing both semblance and final [eras]. In the era of the true Dharma, there is teaching, practice, and realization. In the era of the semblance Dharma—"semblance" meaning "similar"—there is teaching and practice, resembling the era of the true Dharma, but those who realize the fruits are rare. In the era of the final Dharma, there is merely the teaching, but no practitioners.' The Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra states: 'The Buddha said there are two persons who can uphold the true Dharma: the expounder and the practitioner. If those who uphold the taught [Dharma] continue without interruption, they can make the conventional true Dharma abide long. If those who uphold the realized [Dharma] continue without interruption, they can make the ultimate true Dharma abide long. Those who uphold the true Dharma are of two types: First, those who uphold the taught Dharma, meaning those who continuously recite and explain the sūtras, vinaya, and śāstras. Those who uphold the true Dharma are those who can cultivate and realize the undefiled noble path.'
