As for bodhisattva: In full, it should be called bodhisattva, which in Chinese means 'awakened sentient being'. 'Awakened' is the fruit to be sought; 'sentient being' is the domain to be delivered. As for mahāsattva, this translates as 'great sentient being', which is the person capable of seeking and delivering. The Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra states: 'Sattva means courage and vigor; seeking great bodhi, one is therefore named mahāsattva.'
