The Dharmaguptaka Vinaya: The elder *Upamāna addressed the Buddha, saying: 'By what causes and conditions will the Tathāgata's correct Dharma perish rapidly and not abide for long? (The cessation of its functioning is called perishing; it does not mean death.)' The Buddha said: 'There are five causes and conditions: if after the Tathāgata's extinction, the monks do not respect the Buddha, the Dharma, the Saṅgha, the precepts, and samādhi, on this account the correct Dharma will not abide for long.' The Nanshan Commentary says: 'Buddha images, scriptural teachings, and the presiding sacred decorum are all what we revere. Nowadays many monks and nuns do not uphold the Buddha-Dharma; within, they have no correct faith, and their views are neither elevated nor far-reaching, leading them to violate major principles. Sometimes in front of images they jest with one another, utter non-dharmic words, raise their eyes and bare their arms, pointing all around at the holy images; or they sit upright in arrogance without fear or awe in their minds. Even when seeing scriptures and images, they do not rise to welcome and revere them, causing worldly people to look upon them with contempt and ridicule, damaging and extinguishing the correct Dharma. Knowing that there are many faults, one must exercise the utmost caution. Whenever going to a stūpa and beholding the images, one must be filled with trepidation and show increased respect, as if facing a king or minister; this too can be understood.'
