Realms refers to the three realms. Destinies refers to the six destinies. Dharma Master Sengyou's preface says: 'Now, the positions of the three realms are determined, and the six destinies are demarcated; coarse and subtle have differing appearances, while suffering and pleasure follow divergent paths. Examining their origin, they do not depart from form and mind; inspecting their final return, none is other than arising and ceasing. Arising, ceasing, and transmigration—this is called impermanence; form and mind being shadows and illusions—this is the root of suffering. Therefore, the Nirvāṇa Sūtra compares them to a great river, and the Lotus Sūtra likens them to a burning house. Sages attain transcendent awakening, halt their carriages and return to the source, pulling themselves out of the three realms; only then do they achieve the Way.'
