First is the stage where the five destinies dwell together (subsuming the three evil paths, the four continents, and the six heavens of the desire realm). Second is the stage of joy and bliss born of detachment (subsuming the three heavens of the first dhyāna). Third is the stage of joy and bliss born of concentration (subsuming the three heavens of the second dhyāna). Fourth is the stage of subtle bliss born of detachment (subsuming the three heavens of the third dhyāna). Fifth is the stage of pure equanimity and mindfulness (subsuming the nine heavens of the fourth dhyāna). Sixth is the stage of the sphere of boundless space. Seventh is the stage of the sphere of boundless consciousness. Eighth is the stage of the sphere of nothingness. Ninth is the stage of the sphere of neither-thought-nor-non-thought. 'Stage' (bhūmi) has four meanings: dwelling place, subsumption, containment, and cultivation.
