The Abhidharma states: "The desire realm has fourteen, namely the four evil destinies, the four continents, and the six desire heavens. The form realm has seven, namely the four dhyāna heavens; in the first [dhyāna], Mahābrahmā is taken separately; and in the fourth dhyāna, the five Pure Abodes and the Asañjñi heaven are taken. The formless realm has four, which are the four meditative attainments." The Fayuan [zhulin] raises the question: "It is not yet known for what reason Mahābrahmā in the first dhyāna is separately established as a state of existence?" The answer states: "Heterodox adherents who uphold the view of permanence regard the Great Brahmā King as the master who can create all things, holding that disobeying him brings cyclic existence, while obeying him brings liberation. Moreover, the Great Brahmā King also conceives himself as capable of being the master of creation, as permanent, and as true liberation. To refute their emotional views, the Tathāgata established it separately as one state of existence. As for the Asañjñi heaven, because the beings of that heaven have a fixed lifespan of five hundred kalpas as a retribution devoid of mind, the heterodox hold it to be true nirvāṇa; to refute their view and show that it is not nirvāṇa, the Tathāgata separately established it as one state of existence. Furthermore, regarding the taking of the five Pure Abodes, their heavenly sovereign is Maheśvara; those heterodox adherents consider him to be the lord of creation and believe that taking refuge in him leads to true liberation. To refute their view, it is separately established as one state of existence. Moreover, the reason why the four continents of the human destiny are each established as a state of existence is that the four [evil] destinies entail much suffering and beings do not cling to them with pleasure, while the human destiny is next superior, where beings' pleasure and attachment are deep and grave, and the retributions received in the four continents are different; hence, each is established as one state of existence."
