These are the five destinies: first, devas; second, humans; third, hells; fourth, animals; fifth, hungry ghosts. Because the asuras are subsumed in all four destinies, they are now set open as one destiny, and thus they are called the six destinies. What is the meaning of 'destiny' (gati)? The Vibhāṣā-śāstra states: "It has the meaning of 'where one goes'; because it is the place to which sentient beings ought to go and take rebirth, it is called a destiny." The Abhidharma-śāstra states: "It has the meaning of 'reaching' or 'arriving'; it means that those wholesome and unwholesome karmic causes can cause sentient beings to arrive at their place of rebirth. It also has the meaning of 'path' (mārga); hence they are called the six paths."
