毘婆沙論云。諸趣最勝故光明照耀故。名天也○智度論云有四種天。一生天。謂四天王等已上天也。二名天謂今國王稱天子。三淨天。謂人中生諸聖人。四生淨天。即上界生諸聖人也。

The Vibhāṣā-śāstra states: "Because it is the most supreme of all destinies and because its radiance illuminates, it is called deva (heavenly)." The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra states that there are four kinds of devas: "First, devas by birth, which are the heavens from the Four Heavenly Kings and above. Second, devas by name, such as present worldly kings who are called 'Sons of Heaven'. Third, pure devas, which refers to the holy persons born among humans. Fourth, devas by pure birth, which are the holy persons born in the higher realms."
