2.360

長阿含經云。一生相。謂五陰興起。已得命根。二老相。謂生。壽向盡餘命無幾。三病相。謂眾痛迫切。存亡無期。四死相。謂盡也。風先。火次。諸根敗壞。存亡異趣故。

The Dīrghāgama-sūtra states: "First, the characteristic of birth, meaning the arising of the five aggregates and the attainment of the life faculty. Second, the characteristic of aging, meaning that life and lifespan tend toward exhaustion with little remaining life. Third, the characteristic of illness, meaning that multiple pains press closely, with life and death being unpredictable. Fourth, the characteristic of death, meaning cessation; the wind element dissolves first, the fire element next, all sense faculties decay, and life and death diverge toward different destinies."
