毘奈耶云。因舍利子。降伏撥無後世外道。佛聽比丘學外論。仍須是明慧強記者。方可於一日分三時。初中二分。讀誦佛經。至晚讀外書。是故祇垣中有書院。其中置大千界不同文書。佛許比丘遍讀。為降外道故。不許依其見解。地持論云。若聰明上智。能速受學者。於日月中。常以二分學佛法。一分學外典。

The *Vinaya* states: 'Because Śāriputra subdued non-Buddhists who denied the afterlife, the Buddha permitted monks to study non-Buddhist treatises. Still, it had to be those of bright wisdom and strong memory who were allowed to divide the day into three periods: during the first two periods they read and recited Buddhist scriptures, and toward evening they read non-Buddhist texts. For this reason, in the Jetavana there was a library hall in which different writings of the great trichiliocosm were placed; the Buddha allowed the monks to read them widely for the purpose of subduing non-Buddhists, but did not permit relying on their views.' The *Bodhisattvabhūmi* states: 'If one has sharp intelligence and superior wisdom and can quickly receive teachings, during days and months one should always spend two-thirds of the time learning the Buddha-Dharma and one-third studying non-Buddhist classics.'
