西域記云。西天十五祖迦那提婆。初謁龍猛（菩薩本滿猛以金盛）水令弟子持示之。提婆見默以針投之。弟子持返。猛問彼何辭乎。答默但投針。猛曰智矣。若人也。宜速命入於斯際會。

The Records of the Western Regions says: When the fifteenth patriarch of the Western Heavens, Kāṇadeva, first visited Nāgārjuna (the Bodhisattva's basin was originally full, and Nāgārjuna filled it with gold) and instructed a disciple to take water and show it to him, Deva saw it and silently dropped a needle into it. The disciple brought it back. Nāgārjuna asked: 'What did he say?' He answered: 'He was silent and only dropped a needle.' Nāgārjuna said: 'How wise! He is such a man. Summon him inside quickly to meet at this juncture.'
