Dharma Master Yancong of the Sui said: 'Those who participate in translation must have eight provisions and ten articles. First, a sincere mind to receive the Dharma, with the intention to benefit others. Second, when about to tread the field of victory, first secure the foundation of precepts. Third, in composition expound the Tripiṭaka, and in meaning penetrate the Five Vehicles. Fourth, cursorily read literature and history, skillfully compose classical phrasing, not being overly coarse or clumsy. Fifth, be open-minded and fair-minded, accommodating and flexible in capacity, not fond of obstinate bias, immersed in the arts of the Way, indifferent to fame and profit, without desire to boast ostentatiously. Sixth, one must know Sanskrit words. Seventh, do not let down that [Indian] scholarship. Eighth, widely peruse the Erya and Cangjie, have a rough acquaintance with seal and clerical scripts, and not be benighted about this [Chinese] writing.' As for the ten articles: first, phrasing and rhyme; second, questions and answers; third, names and meanings; fourth, sūtras and treatises; fifth, hymns and praises; sixth, the efficacy of dhāraṇīs; seventh, chapter titles; eighth, specialized vocation; ninth, character radicals; tenth, the sounds of words.
