The Mahāmegha Sūtra says: Shame and remorse are the clothing of all virtues. The Vijñaptimātratā-śāstra says: Shame (hrī) has as its nature revering the worthy and good, and feeling shame at faults and evils, through the power of oneself and the Dharma. Remorse (apatrāpya) has as its nature scorning violence and evil, and feeling shame at faults and evils, through the power of the world. The Abhidharma-śāstra says: Shame means having self-reproach regarding all faults and evils as its essence, functioning as the basis for halting evil actions. Remorse means having shame before others regarding all faults and evils as its essence, functioning to halt evil actions. The Ekottarika Āgama says: The Buddha addressed the monks, "There are two wonderful Dharmas in the world that protect the world: namely, having shame (hrī) and having remorse (apatrāpya). Monks, if these two Dharmas did not exist, the world would not distinguish father, mother, brothers, wife, children, acquaintances, elders, and young; it would be identical with beasts. Therefore, monks, you should practice having shame and having remorse."
