(Zhuì means joining with rivets). The Four-Part Vinaya (Prātimokṣa) says: If a monk keeps a bowl with fewer than five mends (continuous mending) that does not leak, and seeks a new one out of desire for a better one, it is a naiḥsargika-prāyaścittika. The Forest of the Dharma says: Thirty-eight years after the World-Honoured One attained enlightenment, he attended an invitation for a meal by the king of Rājagṛha. When finished, he had Rāhula wash the bowl. Rāhula slipped and dropped it, breaking it into five pieces. On that day, many monks reported to the Buddha that they had all dropped and broken their bowls into five pieces. The Buddha said: "This portends that in the first five hundred years after my nirvāṇa, wicked monks will divide the Vinaya Piṭaka into five divisions." The Buddha then personally used lead-tin rivets to mend the broken bowl; hence it is called 'five-mended.'
