The Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya says: 'There were two bhikṣus debating doctrines. The junior one reprimanded the senior one. The senior one held it in and entered his room; burned by the fire of anger, he immediately died. His body turned into a venomous snake wishing to bite the junior one. At that time, the Buddha, with great compassion, went to his room and had the junior one repent, saying: "You should visualize him as the bhikṣu of former days and pay homage." The Buddha preached the Dharma to the snake, saying: "Good friend, in my presence you once cultivated pure conduct and were destined to be born in heaven. Burned by the fire of anger, you have now become a venomous snake. You should know: all conditioned things are impermanent, all dharmas are without self, and nirvāṇa is tranquil peace." Having heard the Dharma, the snake immediately died and dwelt in heaven.' ○ The Ruiying Jing says: 'How painful are the people of the world! They fight together over unessential matters. In this extreme wickedness, they toil in body and undergo bitter strivings. Though they seek, they cannot obtain; in vain they wear out body and mind. At death they fall into an ocean of suffering, and naturally none will take their place.' ○ Daoxuan's Nanshan Commentary says: 'Whenever you wish to reprimand others, first weigh for yourself the pleasure and anger of your inner heart. If there is resentment, simply restrain and forbear yourself. If the fire erupts from within, it will first burn your own body.'
