Cien explains: 'In the Western Regions the ground is damp, so bricks are piled to make paths, and walking back and forth along them is like the warp of cloth; hence it is called caṅkramaṇa.' The Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya states: 'Walking meditation has five benefits: first, it makes one agile and healthy (jiao is pronounced chao, meaning nimble); second, it gives strength; third, it prevents illness; fourth, it digests food; fifth, it makes the mind firm.' The Sūtra of Three Thousand Dignified Manners gives five places where one may practice walking meditation: first, in a quiet place; second, before the door (before the door of one's own cell); third, before the lecture hall; fourth, under a stūpa; fifth, under a pavilion.
